The State of Academic Writing in Philippine Context
Academic Writing - refers to the forms of expository and argumentativeprose used by university students, faculty, and researchers to convey a body of information about a particular subject.
Generally, academic writing is expected to be precise, semi-formal, impersonal, and objective.
Some students highly rely on the Internet for sources
because of its convenience. Whether they are lazy to go to the library or the
topic they are searching for has very limited resources, students turn to the
Internet for an alternative source. Then again, not everything that is
published online is 100% accurate. Before using a website as a source, look for
citations and references. Or, browse several related websites and check for
consistency. Another challenge is developing a thesis statement. Some researches
discuss a general topic while some are dealing with something specific.
Generally, a thesis statement tells the readers what is the topic you are
covering. A good thesis statement expresses your take or opinion as well as
your conclusion about the topic. If you think your thesis statement has not yet
established all the points you want to cover in the research, rephrase it.
The purpose of the academic essay is to persuade by reasoned discourse. Scholars use the essay amongst themselves to advance ideas. Its value as an instructional tool is to assist students in developing their critical thinking skills. As you recall, critical thinking is defined as: the ability to read theory accurately, appropriate it meaningfully, apply it independently, generate results based on that application, analyze the results, and form a clear argument based on those results that can be defended with a specific line of reasoning.
